The Nebraska Journalism Trust is Nebraska’s first and only statewide, independent, nonprofit news organization. Our mission: To uncover truth, amplify diverse voices, and enrich life in Nebraska.
We are hiring an editor to assist across all of our publications. The successful applicant will edit stories from Flatwater Free Press, Silicon Prairie News and meeting notes from Documenters. This role will also assist in the publishing process by posting stories to our websites.
The assistant editor will report to the executive editor of the Flatwater Free Press, and work closely with the Flatwater, Silicon Prairie News and Documenters teams. The position is based at the organization’s headquarters in downtown Omaha, though we are open to remote work for an established editor in Nebraska.
Hours per week: Full time, exempt position
Location: Flexible- could be remote in Nebraska
Salary Range: $47-$52k
Reports to: Matthew Hansen, Executive Editor of Flatwater Free Press
Key responsibilities
- Edit stories with an eye on clarity, fairness, style and accuracy
- Maintain and lift the quality of stories across publications
- Verify facts, sources, and citations in stories prior to publication
- Format and prepare content for digital publication
- Meet deadlines and prioritize working on various stories across multiple publications
- Contribute to tracking and articulating the impact of our journalism

- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or related field
- Experience in copy editing, preferably in a news environment
- Strong command of AP style and grammar
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Proficiency with WordPress or other content management systems
- Ability to work efficiently under deadline pressure
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Commitment to accuracy, fairness, and journalistic integrity
