Development Intern

The Nebraska Journalism Trust is Nebraska’s first and only statewide, independent, nonprofit news organization. Our mission: To uncover truth, amplify diverse voices, and enrich life in Nebraska.

We are hiring an intern to join Nebraska Journalism Trust for a year to assist with and learn about nonprofit development, which is the process of building relationships and resources to support an organization’s mission. This internship offers hands-on experience in various aspects of fundraising, customer service and data management. 

The development intern will report to the Director of Advancement. The position is based at the organization’s headquarters in downtown Omaha and requires some in-office work, with the potential for remote work. It also offers the opportunity for occasional travel within Nebraska including evening and on weekends. 

Hourly: Flexible, approximately 10 hours per week 

Pay: $17/ hour

Key Responsibilities and Opportunities

  • Complete data projects that aim to increase business intelligence, enhance donor stewardship, and increase donor engagement and revenue
  • Assist in providing customer service support to donors and subscribers
  • Assist in managing our web-based customer relationship management (CRM) database
  • Support the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns
  • Assist in coordination of events, both virtual and in-person
  • Assist with development and publication of a donor newsletter
  • Provide general administrative support to the development team, including organizing files, scheduling meetings, and maintaining donor materials. 
  • Gain transferable professional skills, such as teamwork, meeting deadlines, and accepting feedback. 
  • Gain database skills that are transferable to a wide variety of occupations in marketing, logistics, public service, and more.
  • Learn about the fundraising process including prospect research, donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship

1. Is in eleventh or twelfth grade in a public or private high school; or 

2. Is enrolled in a college, university, or other institution of higher education; or 

3. Is hired and begins their internship within twelve months following graduation from a college, university, or other institution of higher education.

Additional Key Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Business, Communications, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Customer service experience and skills 
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in working with spreadsheets and relational databases
