Multimedia reporter

The Flatwater Free Press, a project of the Nebraska Journalism Trust, is seeking a news photographer and videographer to join its inaugural internship class.

This paid internship program gives college students an opportunity to work in the Flatwater Free Press newsroom over the summer. We’re seeking students who are looking for a professional-level experience and have the initiative, skills and judgment to excel.

The program will include one-on-one coaching and mentoring, but students are expected to handle stories independently and effectively in a deadline-driven environment.

Internship runs from May 23 through August 12, with flexibility. Position is for 20 hours a week, at $20 an hour. Shifts, days and hours may vary. Position is based in Omaha, with some travel as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle assignments that include a variety of journalistic skills: caption writing, copy editing (accurate names, etc.), video and photo production and editing.
  • Gather information from sources at any locations and through any means commonly available for news stories: in person, phonecalls, social media, etc.
  • Ability to travel required. Must have own transportation.
  • Research written, graphic and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings.
  • Quickly and accurately report information for publication.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions.
  • Pitch and execute your own ideas for photo essays and/or videos.

Requirements:

  • Degree-seeking student currently enrolled in a journalism program at a college or university, or with experience in media. Students must have completed one year of college. Preference given to more advanced students. Those who have completed undergraduate work also are accepted.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Experience with professional news photography. Student publications count!
  • Experience performing a wide variety of tasks under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Experience in WordPress a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Reporter

The Flatwater Free Press, a project of the Nebraska Journalism Trust, is seeking a news reporter to join its inaugural internship class.

The reporting intern will work on stories for publication in the Flatwater Free Press and for distribution to media across the state and nation. The stories could be feature stories on important issues, or government accountability pieces. We plan to shape the position around the reporter’s interests and skills. Reporting work will include conceiving of stories, backgrounding story subjects, filing public records requests, doing accountability interviews and fact-checking stories before publication, among other tasks. You may be asked to assist on production or social media.

  • Critical thinking: Sorts out newsworthy information, discerning what is most significant. Connects the dots – synthesizing information to make its importance clear, providing context and perspective. Challenges the prevailing view, seeking alternative explanations.
  • Team-building: Works well with supervisors, co-workers, media collaborators and other partners, taking the initiative to find solutions when faced with impediments to achieving goals.
  • Communicating: Communicates clearly, constructively and in a timely fashion with co-workers, media collaborators, partners and the public.
  • Deadlines: Meets deadlines, effectively managing time and workload.

MARKETING SPECIALIST

We’re looking for someone to help optimize, strategize and coordinate membership and operations for the Nebraska Journalism Trust and Flatwater Free Press. This role will be responsible for collecting and analyzing member data, devising and implementing plans for content distribution and company announcements, increasing awareness of key products to target audiences, and measuring impact.

We’re looking for a strong communicator and a systematic thinker who is reliable, quick on their feet and wants to have a big impact on an innovative newsroom in a fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing tools and methods for collecting data
  • Collecting and analyzing data to identify consumer trends
  • Researching Flatwater’s readership base to develop demographic profiles for use in marketing materials and outreach
  • Creating graphic representations of data and translating complex research into easily readable content
  • Preparing marketing proposals and presentations based on company needs
  • Measuring consumer satisfaction with products or services
  • Monitoring and managing the company’s social media platforms, adjusting outreach tactics as needed
